Development and Initial Validation of the Korean Version of the Self-Determination of Individuals with mental illness

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to develop and verify the validity of the scale of Korean Version of Self-Determination(KVSD) for individuals with mental illness in Korea. To do this purpose, the self-determination research was reviewed and three focus group Interviews of 22 individuals with mental illness were conducted. Also, the profession of mental health reviewed the 33 preliminary questions of the KVSD scale. A total of 436 individuals with mental illness responded to the survey and then the explanatory and confirmatory factor analysis were performed. Finally, 21 items of the KVSD scale were developed. The KVSD consisted of three sub-factors of self-empowerment(9items), self-determination capability(5items), self-determination opportunity(7items) The KVSD scale was verified the construct validity and the reliability(Cronbach’ ?=.957). The KVSD scale can be used as a tool for individuals with mental illness and the mental health social work implications were proposed.
